After the mines closed in 1953, the population of Jerome fell to as little as 50 people.

The town folk reenact the famous shootout, Gunfight at O.K. Corral, which took place in 1881 between the outlaw gang called the Cowboys and the Earps. Located 10 miles south of downtown Tuscon, Arizona, the San Xavier Mission is an old Catholic opened in 1797. The stunning architecture and tall ceilings make this mission look like the cathedrals that are spread all over Europe. This mission, built when Arizona was still part of New Spain, went through many trials before ultimately falling into the US's hands after the Gadsden Purchase, the acquisition of southern Arizona and southwest New Mexico from Mexico through a treaty, in 1854.
